JANET SCALESE NAMED ACTING DIRECTOR FOR TTB'S ADVERTISING, LABELING AND FORMULATION DIVISION

Effective December 1, and until the position is filled permanently, Janet Scalese will be the acting director of the Advertising, Labeling and Formulation Division (ALFD). Scalese is currently the chief of TTB's Nonbeverage Products Laboratory and has 30 years of experience with the alcohol industry.

She joins:

  • Gracie Joy, Assistant Director for Wine Labeling
  • Teresa Knapp, Assistant Director for Distilled Spirits-Malt Beverage Labeling and Formulation
  • Sandie Sisler, Assistant Director for Market Compliance
  • Donna Smith, Chief of the Risk Assessment and Information Services Office

USDA AGRICULTURAL MARKETING SERVICE SEEKS NOMINATIONS TO FRUIT AND VEGETABLE INDUSTRY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is calling for nominations for a re-chartered 2013-2015 Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee. The Committee advises the Secretary of Agriculture on issues faced by the fruit and vegetable industry.

Written nominations for the 2013-2015 committee are due December 26.

The Secretary of Agriculture will appoint up to 25 representatives of the nation's fruit and vegetable industry to serve terms of two or three years. Members represent fruit and vegetable growers, shippers, wholesalers, brokers, processors, and retailers, as well as fresh cut processors, foodservice suppliers, state agricultural agencies, and fruit and vegetable-related trade associations.

SOUTH CAROLINA TOBACCO BROKER CONVICTED – GUILTY OF 44 WIRE FRAUD AND MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGES

A 67-year-old Lake City, South Carolina tobacco broker was found guilty by a U.S. District Court jury of 44 felony counts, including interstate travel in aid of racketeering, a wire fraud conspiracy to defraud Canada of tax revenue, a conspiracy for the unlicensed manufacture of tobacco products, and concealment money laundering.

The prosecution arose from the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Force, Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Massena Police Department, the United States Border Patrol, and the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office.
